BIRD FLU (AVIAN INFLUENZA)
Description

  Symptoms
Breathing - difficulty Chest - pain Cough
Diarrhea Fever Head - ache
Muscles - aching Nausea Nose - runny
Throat - sore Vomiting
  Description
It is the common influenza caused by viruses but adapted to birds who shed the virus in their saliva, nasal secretions and feces. Symptoms depend on the strain of virus. The H5N1 virus in humans causes typical flu-like symptoms. Fever is commonly greater than 100.4°F (38°C)

Avian influenza cannot be diagnosed by symptoms alone. Therefore, a laboratory test is required.

There are many subtypes of avian influenza viruses, but only four subtypes have been highly pathogenic in humans. These are types H5N1, H7N3, H7N7 and H9N2. Most of these cases have resulted from people having direct or close contact with H5N1-infected poultry or contaminated surfaces.
  Diagnosis
A doctor might perform the following tests and procedures:
- Personal  interview to determine if the patient has been exposed to the infection
- Auscultation
- Chest x-ray
- Nasopharyngeal culture (samples of fluids from nose or throat)
- Blood test
- Gram stain
