Vaccination is the best way to prevent the disease. However, adults are recommended to get another
dose every 10 years.
The patient must be isolated and hospitalized to prevent the infection
Diphtheria is treated with the following medications and approaches:
- Antibiotics, mainly based on penicillin or macrolides.
- Antitoxins to neutralize the diphtheria toxin.
- Surgery. When the patient has breathing difficulties the gray membrane
covering the throat can be removed.
